Healing from Childhood Trauma | Trauma Therapy in New York City
Did you ever get told this?
“You’re so mature for your age”?
Listen, there’s some really great things that come along with being mature; deep wisdom, insights, awareness, relationship skills and intuition.
At the same time, there’s something beautiful about being able to be the emotional level of your chronological age.
Being “mature for your age” is often synonymous with needing to grow up too quickly.
And when life throws some dodge balls that push us, or our kids, to maturing just a bit sooner than expected... the best thing to do is to find ways to have fun and add play and other age-related activities to your and their life.
Trauma makes you think and feel big picture.
-->It pushes overthinking, over-feeling and over-being-aware.
-->It also can push “under-being”, spacing out and being disinterested.
-->It may also compel you to being a “Yes ma’am” and people pleasing to avoid conflict.
These all happen because your mind and body are programmed to operating in a certain environment that needed survival skills to kick in.
So, my invite to you is:
Bow in thanks to the deep maturity, to the wisdom, to the knowledge, insight and intuition.
Find others who “get” you and understand you for who you are.
And find some ways to sprinkle some fun and joy into your life, where you can act and feel the chronological age that you are
In healing, you may also need to do some activities you didn’t get to do: maybe you need to do some art, dance to music or go to a children’s museum if you missed out on that when you were younger. 🛼🩰🥁
We can’t skip developmental tasks, and when we do, we do our best when we tend to those unmet needs so that we can evolve and grow into our best adult selves.
And for little ones, or not-so-little-ones in your life, if they are dealing with some loss, pain, grief, struggle, anxiety or social or family issue... find spaces and time for them to play, to giggle, to laugh and to be.... their age :)
Don’t worry, that maturity and wisdom will be there too.. but adding play is important for all of us!
