When You’re Feeling Lost, Read This: The Hero’s Journey and Somatic Therapy in
This morning, I woke up and kissed my son on his cheek.
I asked if he wanted to share what he was grateful for today — or if I should start.
He began, then it was my turn.
I shared my gratitude and smiled.
That small exchange brought me back to a Thanksgiving a few years ago, when I felt far less ease than I do today.
What Comforted Me: The Hero’s Story
Orienting to the Hero’s Journey helped me understand the phases of my life — the moments of change, the struggle, and the triumphs.
It gave me a framework to embody the season I was in — with more trust and ease.
It showed me what to focus on, and what to release.
It helped me feel more grounded, energized, and aligned with my deeper values.
I want you to experience that same clarity and comfort.
What Is the Hero’s Journey?
The Hero’s Journey — originally articulated by Joseph Campbell — is a narrative map of personal transformation.
It describes the universal human experience of leaving what’s familiar, facing the unknown, and emerging with new wisdom.
When we understand this map, we can locate ourselves in the terrain of our own healing.
We realize: We’re not lost. We’re in process.
Your Pain and the Hero’s Journey
Think about the areas of your life that ache — the parts that feel uncertain, heavy, or unfinished.
What if, instead of seeing them as evidence of defeat, you saw them as evidence of movement?
Every challenge, every stuck moment, is part of your Hero’s arc.
When you name the phase you’re in, you can orient to it with compassion — and take the next right step, rather than feeling overwhelmed by the whole mountain.
The key isn’t just to “get through.”
It’s to remember that you’re on a journey — and that this chapter matters, too.
The Three Phases of the Hero’s Journey
Departure — Leaving the ordinary world.
The moment before the change. When you sense something stirring and realize life won’t stay the same.Initiation — Entering the unknown.
Facing challenges, learning, unlearning, discovering what you’re capable of.Return — Coming home transformed.
Integrating what you’ve learned, bringing back wisdom and renewed capacity to your world.
Reframing Your Struggles
Instead of seeing struggles as failures, try seeing them as dragons to be faced — the kind every true Hero meets on the path.
Your life is your Hero’s Journey.
Each challenge is an initiation into a more resilient, integrated version of you.
This is the heart of somatic therapy — the kind of healing that doesn’t just happen in the mind, but in the body.
As a somatic therapist in NYC, I’ve seen time and again how the nervous system holds the stories we’re still living — and how, when we meet them with compassion, the body itself becomes the map home.
Wherever You Are
Are you at the edge of something new?
Are you deep in the unknown?
Or are you returning home, integrating what’s been learned?
Wherever you are — know that you’re not alone.
We are all navigating a terrain of our own becoming.
I’m here cheering you on —
if you’re in new territory,
celebrating a victory,
or facing your own dragon.
Sending love and support,
Esther
